    Ausland US-Sängerin Eartha Kitt stirbt mit 81 Jahren

    Die US-Schauspielerin und Sängerin Eartha Kitt ist tot. Die Frau mit der markanten, sinnlichen Stimme starb 81-jährig an Krebs. Neben ihren Gesangserfolgen wie "C'est si bon" wurde Kitt durch TV-Rollen wie "Catwoman" berühmt. Mit ihrer Kritik am Vietnamkrieg sorgte sie 1968 für einen Eklat.

    Sie war eine Legende schon zu Lebzeiten: Eartha Kitt, die Sängerin und Schauspielerin, die sechs Jahrzehnte auf der Bühne stand. Ihre zarte aber ausdrucksvolle Stimme reichte von wütendem Fauchen bis zum sanften Schnurren. Einer ihrer größten Titel, "C'est si bon", begleitete fast eine ganze Generation. 

    Durchbruch in den 50er Jahren

    Eartha Kitt stammte aus einfachen Verhältnissen und wurde als Tochter eines Baumwollpflückers 1927 geboren. Als 15-Jährige stellte sie sich bei einem Katherine-Dunham-Gastspiel als Tänzerin vor und wurde direkt engagiert. Trotzdem nahm sie noch mehrjährigen Unterricht in Tanz, Gesang und Schauspiel. Danach tourte sie mit dem Katherine-Dunham-Ensemble um die Welt. Ihren Durchbruch schaffte sie  Anfang der 50er Jahre. Orson Welles holte sie für seine Version des Faust auf die Bühne. Hollywoodfilme und Musicals am Broadway folgten.

    Von "Catwoman" zum "oldfashioned girl"

    Eartha Kitt war äußerst vielseitig: Als "Catwoman", als Katzenfrau, spielte sie in der Fernsehserie "Batman". Im Schauspiel "Mr Patterson" stand sie als erste Schwarze auf einer Bühne des ernsten Theaters in den USA. Und am Broadway begeisterte sie als Hauptdarstellerin im Musical "Die Witwe von Paris". Und doch gab sie sich immer wieder als "oldfashioned girl", wie es in einem ihrer Hits heißt - als "altmodisches Mädchen". 

    Kritik am Vietnamkrieg

    Von dieser Rolle wich sie nur einmal wirklich ab und verursachte damit gleich einen Eklat. Ausgerechnet bei einer Einladung ins Weiße Haus in Washington kritisierte sie nachdrücklich den Vietnamkrieg der Amerikaner. Zehn Jahre wurde es nun ruhig um sie.  Die berühmte Eartha Kitt war bei den Granden der Unterhaltungsindustrie und bei vielen Amerikanern in Ungnade gefallen. Mit "Where is my man" feierte sie dann 1983 im Disco-Stil ihr Comeback.

    Die Liste ihrer Auszeichnungen ist lang. Sie erhielt zwei Emmys und viele andere Preise. In einem Alter, in dem andere in den wohlverdienten Ruhestand gehen, drehte sie erst richtig auf. Noch vor zwei Jahren, mit 79 Jahren, sagte sie in einem Fernsehinterview: "Ich liebe es, dieses Gefühl zu haben, das mir das Publikum gibt."  

    Gearbeitet hat sie fast bis zum letzten Tag. Ohne Auftritte konnte sie nicht sein. Noch vor sechs Wochen war sie zu Aufnahmen in Chicago. Dies war ihr Leben. Gestern verstarb Eartha Kitt in New York an Darmkrebs, 23 Tage vor ihrem 82. Geburtstag.

    Orson Welles l'appelait la "femme la plus excitante du monde": actrice et chanteuse à la voix rauque, Eartha Kitt est morte d'un cancer, ce jeudi, à l'âge de 81 ans.

    Elle était réputée pour son allure féline et ses interprétations voluptueuses, sur scène comme au cinéma, pour sa voix, aussi, rauque et sensuelle. Eartha Kitt est morte ce jeudi, à l'âge de 81 ans.

    Née en 1927 dans une famille pauvre de Caroline du Sud, elle avait fait ses débuts au cabaret avec la Compagnie Katherine Dunham et au cinéma dans Casbah, en 1948.

    Célèbre pour ses tours de chant aguicheurs, elle se décrivait elle-même comme un "chaton sexy" ("sexy kitty") et n'hésitait pas à jouer de ses charmes pour séduire ses fans - dont Orson Welles, qui l'avait qualifiée de "femme la plus excitante du monde".

    Parmi ses titres les plus marquants, une reprise de C'est Si Bon, Let's Do It, Just an Old Fashioned Girl, un tube de Noël, Santa Baby, sorti en 1953 (à écouter ci-dessous), et, plus récemment, en 1983, Where is my man.

    Elle avait également revêtu le costume de Catwoman dans la série télévisée Batman, dans les années 60.

    Ces mêmes années 60 qui l'ont rejetée, aux Etats-Unis, après qu'elle avait pris position contre la guerre au Viêtnam. Elle s'était alors tournée vers l'Europe, avant de faire un retour triomphal, quelques années plus tard, dans son pays natal, où elle a obtenu plusieurs récompenses pendant sa carrière, dans tous les domaines, dont deux Emmy Awards.

    American singer, dancer and actress Eartha Kitt has died at the age 81, her friend and publicist has said.

    Kitt died of colon cancer on Thursday, Andrew Freedman said.

    She was one of the few artists to be nominated in the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award categories and was a stalwart of the Manhattan cabaret scene.

    She famously played Catwoman in the Batman television series in the 1960s and was known for her distinctive, feline drawl.

    She also had a number of hit songs, including Old Fashioned Girl, C'est Si Bon and Santa Baby.

    Kitt was blacklisted in the US in the late 1960s after speaking out against the Vietnam War at a White House function.

    She also caused controversy when she toured apartheid South Africa in 1974, arguing that she had helped wean the regime by raising awareness of racism.

    However, she returned triumphantly to New York's Broadway in a 1978 production, Timbuktu!, and continued to perform regularly in theatre shows and concert halls.

    From the 1980s onwards she appeared in numerous films, and her 1984 hit Where Is My Man found her another generation of night club fans.

    Big break

    Kitt rose to the top of the entertainment world from humble origins.

    Her mother worked on a cotton plantation in South Carolina and was just 14 when she gave birth.

    Kitt was then given away at the age of eight and sent to live with an aunt in New York.

    Her break came at 16 when she got a job as a dancer with a professional troupe touring Europe. She later sang in Paris nightclubs and appeared in several films in the 1950s.

    Kitt, who had one daughter from a brief marriage in the 1960s, lived in the US state of Connecticut.

    Die US-Sängerin und Schauspielerin Eartha Kitt ist im Alter von 81 Jahren an Krebs gestorben. Das berichtete der US-Nachrichtensender CNN unter Hinweis auf ihre Sprecherin. Kitt starb in New York, wo sie wegen Darmkrebs behandelt wurde.

    Die Sängerin war für ihre eindrucksvolle, vielseitige Stimme bekannt, die vom sanften Schnurren bis zum wütenden Fauchen reichte. In den 40er und 50er Jahren galt sie als schwarze Muse der weißen Bohème, als "Catwoman" in der Fernsehserie "Batman" erreichte sie Kultstatus. Sie erhielt zwei Emmys und viele andere Preise. Zu ihren größten Hits gehören "Je cherche un homme", "C'est si bon", "Let's Do It" und "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".

    Bühnenkarriere mit 16 Jahren

    Als Tochter eines armen Baumwollpflückers in den amerikanischen Südstaaten geboren, begann Kitt ihre Bühnenkarriere mit 16 Jahren in New York. Mit der Dunham Dance Group trat sie in allen Hauptstädten Europas auf - unter anderem auch 1948 vor der englischen Königsfamilie in London. Kurz darauf verließ sie das Ensemble und startete im Pariser Nachtclub "Carrols" ihre Laufbahn als Solistin.

    Hollywoodstar Orson Welles, für den Kitt "die aufregendste Frau der Welt" war, entdeckte sie dort und holte sie 1951 für seine "Faust"-Version auf die Bühne. Mit dem Stück war Kitt auch in Deutschland zu sehen. In den 50er Jahren feierte sie am Broadway mit Musicals Karriere und spielte in mehreren Hollywoodfilmen mit, unter anderem in "Accused" und "Anna Lucasta".

    Kritik am Vietnamkrieg

    Mit nachdrücklicher Kritik am Vietnamkrieg, ausgerechnet im Weißen Haus vorgetragen, fiel sie 1968 bei den Mächtigen der Entertainment-Industrie in Ungnade und wurde erst zehn Jahre später rehabilitiert. Mit dem Titel "Where Is My Man?" belegte sie 1983 Spitzenplätze in den Hitparaden und leitete ihr internationales Comeback ein. Bis kurz vor ihrem Tod machte sie noch Aufnahmen in Chicago. Sie lebte in Connecticut, nahe bei ihrer Tochter und ihren vier Enkelkindern.

    Kitt Shapiro, the daughter of the singer Eartha Kitt of Weston, Conn., is to be married today to Allan Bruce Rothschild, the son of Rita and Stanley Rothschild of Merrick, N.Y. Rabbi Mark Lipson will officiate at the couple's house in Westport, Conn.

    Ms. Shapiro, 40, will keep her name. The bride manages her mother's tours and recording career and is the production manager at Eartha Kitt Productions in New York.

    Mr. Rothschild, also 40, is a commercial real estate broker and developer in Westport. He was until March the senior managing director of the New York office of C. B. Richard Ellis, the commercial real estate brokerage company. He graduated from Emory and received a law degree from Yeshiva University. His father is a real estate lawyer in Carle Place, N.Y.

    The bridegroom's previous marriage ended in divorce, as did the bride's.

    Ms. Shapiro and Mr. Rothschild were introduced by her friend Pamela Hochstin and his friend Elaine Rubin, who had agreed that the two would make a good match. The meeting took place at a party in Ms. Hochstin's home in Scarsdale, N.Y., last July.

    ''By the next night we were out with each other again,'' Ms. Shapiro said. ''And by the end of that night we were already talking about marriage. When you are older you know what you are looking for. We both knew right away that this would work.''

    A remarriage can cause a wide range of dislocations for the couple, their children and their former spouses. In this instance, however, it helped forge a new sense of togetherness. Both Ms. Shapiro and Mr. Rothschild share custody of children with their ex-spouses.

    ''When Allan and I decided to buy a house in Westport, I asked my ex-husband, who was living in Scarsdale, whether he'd consider moving to Westport,'' Ms. Shapiro said. ''He agreed. Allan's ex-wife and their two children already lived in Westport. And then, my mother bought a home in the Westport area also.''

    Almost everybody will attend the wedding; Mr. Rothschild's 11-year-old son is to be his best man.

    ''We're the new Brady Bunch,'' the bride gushed.
